Pankti Hitesh Shah

Intern at BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc

Pankti is a student with a major in Chemical Engineering and a minor in Computer Science. During her internship, she worked at BioMarin Pharmaceutical in the San Francisco Bay. Pankti believes that the reason she was hired was thanks to the projects she had completed before. These include her previous work-term, research experiences, enthusiasm, and interest in the industry. Her advice for resumes and cover letter includes being clear on goals, tailoring skillsets, specific experiences to the job, and highlighting keywords used in job descriptions.

Pankti says that for interviews, it is important to showcase problem-solving abilities, curiosity, and career vision. Showcasing personality is also important. Another piece of advice is to be prepared to ask effective questions that show interest.

Luke Zhu

Intern at DESTINE

Luke is a student with a major in Chemical Engineering. During his internship, he worked for a company called DESTINE at the Foothills Hotchkiss Brain Institute. Luke believes that his enthusiasm and willingness to learn were the reasons he was hired.  His advice for resumes and cover letter includes going to APEGA resume and cover letter building workshops.

Luke says that for interviews, it is important to be confident in yourself and show how you are enthusiastic about the project and industry. It is also helpful to attend APEGA interview workshops.

Kevin J. Chung

Intern at Foothills Hotchkiss Brain Institute

Kevin is a student with a major in Mechanical Engineering. During his internship, he worked in Dr. Bijoy Menon’s lab at Foothills Hotchkiss Brain Institute. Kevin believes that his work ethic and interest during his time as volunteer were the reasons he was hired.  His advice for resumes includes having bullet points. Each bullet point should quantitatively describe one of three things, “What did you do?”, “How did you do it?”, “What was the impact”. His advice for cover letters includes exemplifying core competencies, such as mechanical design, mathematical and numerical modelling, etc. Giving context and examples on these competencies are demonstrated is important

Kevin says that for interviews, it is important to bring insightful questions to ask. It is also important to be confident and relaxed.


His experience as an intern was mainly using software, which is not geared towards his major. However, after having completed his internship, Kevin felt that he as engineer became more well-rounded. Maria Teresa Baclig

Intern at BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc.

Maria is a student with a major in Chemical Engineering. During her internship, she worked at BioMarin Pharmaceutical in the San Francisco Bay. Maria believes that her passion for biotechnology, knowledge about the company and related job experience were the reasons she was hired.  Her advice for resumes and cover letter building includes providing only related experience, adding specific details about the company and explaining how personal goals align with the company goals. It is also important to not downplay any extracurricular and leadership activities.

Maria says that for interviews, it is important to be yourself. One helpful trick is telling the interviewer something that cannot be found on your resume or cover letter. Maria also says that it is crucial to know the company well, and to ask them questions about their future as a company. Maria says that for answering questions, it is valuable to explain the impact of what you did and the value of your actions.


Maria found her experience as an intern to be very enjoyable. She had freedom over her project, and it allowed her to grow technically and hone her communication and management skills.
